Saint Maries History
|
Founded at the junction of the St. Maries and St. Joe rivers as a good location to install a sawmill, the town of St. Maries is now almost a century old. Thanks to the dense forests and easily navigated rivers, the timber industry has driven this town from the very beginning. Additional sawmills were built as steamboats and railroad began serving this area and boosting the local economy. The demand for lumber during the two World Wars was also very important to the continued stability of the town of St. Maries. The timber industry has continued to bring people and success to the community.
